Typical Recovery Time
Most people need 24 to 72 hours to recover after a workout. The exact time depends on:
- How hard the workout was
- Which muscles you used
- Your fitness level
- Your age, sleep, and nutrition
Smaller muscle groups like arms and calves usually heal faster. Bigger ones like your legs or back can take longer.
Signs Your Muscles Are Still Recovering
You might feel sore or stiff after a workout. This is called delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS). It usually peaks 1 to 2 days after exercise. While it’s okay to feel sore, too much pain or swelling may mean your body needs more time to rest.
