Standing Calf Raise exercise

The standing calf raise is a classic bodyweight exercise that targets the calf muscles—specifically the gastrocnemius and soleus. By lifting your heels off the ground while standing, you engage the lower legs to build strength, endurance, and definition. This movement is simple, effective, and can be performed anywhere, with or without added resistance.

How to perform Standing Calf Raise

  1. Stand upright with your feet hip-width apart and your hands by your sides or resting on a stable surface for balance.
  2. Keep your legs straight but not locked, and engage your core.
  3. Slowly raise your heels off the ground by pushing through the balls of your feet.
  4. Lift as high as possible, squeezing your calf muscles at the top.
  5. Pause briefly at the top for maximum contraction.
  6. Lower your heels back to the ground with control.
  7. Repeat for the desired number of reps, maintaining balance and smooth movement.

Use controlled movement and an appropriate variation for your current ability. Stop if an exercise causes sharp pain, and seek qualified guidance when needed.
