Overhead Press (Barbell) exercise

The overhead barbell press builds strength and size in the shoulders, especially the deltoids, and also works the triceps and upper chest. It’s a key compound lift for upper body pressing strength.

How to perform Overhead Press (Barbell)

  1. Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and grip the bar slightly wider than your shoulders.
  2. Clean the bar to your shoulders or unrack it from a rack at upper chest level.
  3. Brace your core and keep your elbows slightly forward.
  4. Press the bar overhead in a straight line until your arms are fully extended.
  5. Lower the bar back to the starting position under control.
  6. Repeat for the desired number of reps.

Use controlled movement and an appropriate variation for your current ability. Stop if an exercise causes sharp pain, and seek qualified guidance when needed.
