Planche Lean exercise
A bodyweight drill leaning forward in plank to build planche strength and wrist endurance.

How to perform Planche Lean
- Start in a plank, hands turned slightly out.
- Lean shoulders forward over wrists.
- Engage core and keep elbows straight.
- Hold the forward lean position for time.
- Return to neutral plank to finish.
What is Planche Lean?
The planche lean is a straight-arm plank drill in which the shoulders move forward beyond the wrists while the feet stay on the floor. It builds tolerance and body-line control for planche progressions without adding the lowering and pressing phase of a planche lean push-up.
What muscles does Planche Lean work?
The front shoulders, chest, triceps, serratus anterior, and wrist and forearm muscles support the lean. The abdominal wall, obliques, glutes, quadriceps, upper back, and rotator cuff keep the elbows straight and the body rigid.
Planche Lean form cues and common mistakes
- Warm the wrists and shoulders, use a nonslip surface, and begin in a high plank with the hands turned only as far as feels comfortable.
- Push the floor away, keep the elbows straight, brace the abdomen and glutes, and maintain a rounded or neutral upper-back position without letting the chest collapse.
- Lean the shoulders forward gradually while the toes stay planted and the body moves as one unit rather than bending at the hips.
- Hold only the farthest position you can control without wrist pain, elbow bend, shoulder shrugging, or the lower back sagging, then shift back slowly.
- Reduce the lean, elevate the hands, or use parallettes to change wrist demands; stop for sharp wrist, elbow, or shoulder pain.
How to add Planche Lean to a workout
Practice planche leans while fresh after a wrist and shoulder warm-up. Start with 3 to 5 holds of 8 to 20 seconds, leaving a few seconds in reserve. Increase forward lean before chasing longer holds, and allow recovery between hard sessions.
Frequently asked questions
What does the planche lean work?
It trains the front shoulders, chest, triceps, serratus, wrists, and forearms while the core, glutes, legs, upper back, and rotator cuff maintain a rigid straight-arm position.
How far should I lean in a planche lean?
Lean only as far as you can keep the elbows straight, shoulders supported, trunk rigid, and wrists comfortable. A smaller controlled lean is more useful than a farther position that collapses.
What is the difference between a planche lean and planche lean push-up?
The planche lean is a static straight-arm hold. The planche lean push-up keeps the forward shoulder position while adding a controlled lowering and pressing repetition.
Use controlled movement and an appropriate variation for your current ability. Stop if an exercise causes sharp pain, and seek qualified guidance when needed.
